Lefkada again. Greece on the road.

Lefkada, a unique beauty with mesmerising blue waters washing its shores

It was those incredible blue waters that made me return to Lefkada. I could not stay away nor miss it. I could not have a road trip through Greece without going to Lefkada. I just couldn`t.

I left Corfu with no regrets. Two days are not enough for an island to visit, but it was enough for me. In my mind, I could already see myself wandering on the west coast Lefkada. From Igoumenitsa where the ferry left us after crossing the sea we took, the road E55. 135 km road to Lefkada is passing through some scenic landscape. Lefkada is an island connected to the mainland by a mobile bridge so it does not involve crossing the sea with a ferry. Be aware, thou, after you cross the mobile bridge you might encounter the “greeting committee“. This “greeting committee“ has the sole purpose to collect money for the budget so you might find yourself being fined without knowing why. Don`t worry they will find a reason. I am saying this because we had  the “pleasure “ of meeting this committee and our contribution to the budget was 40 euros.  The irony of the situation was that they accused Crina of speeding when she definitely was not. Don`t get me wrong, she is far from being a saint, speeding is her middle name. But that particularly moment she was not speeding at all.

We did not let an incident like that to spoil our vacation and we forgot about it the moment we arrived where we were staying.

Normally I hardly mention the places we are staying because we just sleep there and the rest does not really matter. Here, I was impressed by the incredible view, location, the silence and the wonderful people running this small hotel.

It was not the complimentary glass of wine that we were greeted with that touched me. I was touched by the beautiful sunset I witnessed and by Kristina the owner, which is such a wonderful person. I felt so sorry that we allocate to explore Lefkada only two days. What were we thinking? There, it was Paradise!!!!

I sipped my wine,  watched the sunset and made fun of Crina for the fine she took. I can’t say she was very happy about that but I continued to make fun of her. The glass of wine, which by the way was more than one but I remember only the first one, made us forget about everything. Our giggles could be heard while the sun was setting. That particular moment we were happy! Living the Today. Because Tomorrow…well Tomorrow always comes with a  different  story…

Next morning, I had my coffee with a view. It was the best coffee. How many times can it happen to have your coffee with such beautiful view? I am telling you. Not very often. So, I made sure that I will always remember that coffee, that day, that incredible view.

La casa D`Irene is placed close to Kathisma beach and since I had a suspicion that maybe just because is so close to it we might not have time to see it, we started our beaching tour with Kathisma. It was off season and the sea was looking as beautiful as I was remembering. All the clubs from the beach were closed and it was perfect because this way we could enjoyed the beach for ourselves. We haven’t stayed there for too long. It was too chilly to try to bathe in the sun not to mention to try to have a bath in the sea. So we decided to go towards Egremni.

I came to Lefkada to see the western beaches, what I did not realise was the amplitude of the October earthquake which shaken the island. We took the road along the shore going south towards Egremni , We passed through villages and through the olives grooves. That part of Lefkada is as beautiful as I thought it will be. Wild, spectacular and not easy to reach. Unfortunately, the road to Egremni got blocked with derbies and we could not go further. The land there is a bit unstable and bores the marks made by the earthquake. I was a bit reckless when I went to try taking some pictures of the beach in a zone which was clearly prone to landslide, it could have happened any minute because large cracks could be seen on the land. I would not recommend that, thou.  Stick to the safer zones.

We were a bit disappointed about not being able to reach Egremni but since the time was short we decided to head towards Vasiliki in the south.

From Egremni to Vasiliki are 19km and the road took us through the mountainous area of the island. The view was spectacular and I had the sensation we were on the mainland from the way it looked like. The Sight of Kefalonia Island shadow at the horizon reminded me where I was and we stopped the car to admire the landscape. We were the only one on that road anyway.

When we reached Vasiliki I could hear a call in my stomach, which was more of a whine, letting me know that I am hungry. We entered the first open and more lively tavern and we ordered baked feta, my favourite.

Vasiliki is best known in the surfing and kite surfing community. Now, it was so quiet. calm and  very empty It was nice but not enough to keep me there. So we decided to go to Porto Katsiki. From Vasiliki to Porto Katsik, the most spectacular beach in Lefkada the distance is 15 km.

The white vertical cliffs at the end of which a narrow pebbelish beach can be found are giving an air of grandeur to the entire landscape. It has a wild rugged beauty that only in Lefkada can be found. This was the place that made us stay. We stood there on the beach for several hours, protected from the winds. Listening to the sound of rolling pebbles every time the waves were coming to the shore, frying our skin under the Greek sun, dipping our bodies in a water with an unique colour caused by the limestone dissolved in the sea water.

Being there I was thinking that I travelled 1200 km to get there. I might be crazy or …I am crazy for sure!!! But how can I ignore the call of Lefkada!? It is so magical…

Time was passing inevitable and the sun was preparing to set. We returned to Agios Nikitas because I wanted to watch the sunset from my favorite place, a small terrace facing the bay which belongs to Ostria Hotel.

It was closed since they were not expecting tourists and by the time I got there the sun was long set. Our last day in Lefkada was ending and in that moment it seemed so incredible that I actually saw all those amazing places. It was a short trip and intense without giving me anytime to be touched by boredom.

Lefkada is like me, rugged and wild. Maybe that’s why I love it, maybe that`s why it will be part of me..always!!!
