Bucharest, Bicycle, and I. The Holy Molly Threesome

God Bless the Summer!!!

Yes!!! I do love Summer! It is not for the good weather I love it, or for the abundance of  the sun heat, sometimes having a bit too much. Or for the vacations I took. That`s right, this year, the word vacation came in plural..vacations. But for the fact that the city, in this case, my city, becomes emptier…Halleluiah!!! This means..less traffic..less crowded…Already these two words are music to my ears.Victoria Square, Bucharest, Romania

It means that I can go cycling around the city,  worrying less about the traffic. In Bucharest, traffic can be kind of a hustle, which can diminish  the pleasure of cycling.

My personal choice is to cycle to the North  part of the city before sunset when heat is caving in. I like the heat, but let’s not exaggerate, shall we…! And while cycling around the lake to watch how to sun is going down. In order to do that, I have to cross a big chunk of the city, to find the shortest way to reach the park,  and I have to dodge the traffic in the same time. Although sound like a hand full, It is worth it, because I am passing through an area wich I like the most.

When I reach Kiseleff Boulevard I am already more relaxed. I stop speeding, and although I know by heart  every villa  from both sides of  the boulevard I still admire it while passing by. I have the impression that every time I pass I notice something different, something I haven’t seen before…

Probably it is something in the light, or maybe depends on my mood…or it is possible to just have too much imagination.

There is nothing extraordinary abut the Herastrau park nor,  about the lake. It is just a lake and it is just a park, same as so many other parks and lakes. It is the sunset light which makes it that special. There is something in the combination between the lake, bicycle, and sunset which makes it absolutely magical. It can be that moment when the sunlight it is filtered by the weeping willows foliage. Or when ducks and little ducklings are floating on the water mirror undisturbed.

Or when music can be heard from the restaurants across the lake while the last sun rays are caught by the lake`s shimmers.

There it is a wooden pier on the lake,  which is used by a canoeing club as a departure point for the rowing lessons. Probably having the same age as the park. It is eaten by the time and water, covered with moss and from place to place a loose rusty nail it is showing its head to the world. That is the place where I am sitting, legs crossed,  with my bicycle lying close to me watching the sunset…

It gives me the feeling like being on a swinging boat and that somehow I can feel the heartbeats of the lake…

As much as I like to contemplate the sunset on the lake  I am getting up on my bicycle and continue my ride.

The light turns golden and it feels like an embrace on my skin. I am happy. I am on my bicycle but my mind it is so far away melting on the sunset. Blame it on my imagination…

I stop for a while at an open air cinema and watch the last minute of a movie. I sitting on the grass with my bicycle close, and although I am supposed to look at the screen I am watching the sky changing its colors.

I am leaving the park and take the new bicycle track made on Calea Victoriei, the oldest street in Bucharest. Being like the Strand in London, or Broadway in New York, the streets around which the city of Bucharest developed.

To cycle at night time on that street, it is a real pleasure because most of the historical buildings are placed there and to my surprise Bucharest seems to be quite animated at night time. Bucharest gives me more and more the Tel Aviv feeling, the city which never sleeps.

Calea Victoriei takes me to my point of interest..the old city. Probably the most lively part of Bucharest, the old city it is the place to be in every season any day of the week.

My favorite place it is a small Sky Bar on top of a Hostel. named Pura Vida Sky Bar. Placed in the heart of the old city it had a Bohemian atmosphere which I absolutely love.

The best place to see the sunset reflected on the copper rooftops of the National Bank of Romania. Being up there on the edge seeing people passing  on the streets gives me the detachment feeling I am looking for.

The night is falling. Stars above are blinking and from up there I am trying to see the Perseids. I am taking my phone and open the Google sky app and aim it to the sky to see the name of the stars. I am sipping my lemonade my bicycle is parked downstairs. The music is perfect, and for a while I am lost in dreaming…head in the sky between the stars this time …wishing upon a star…

As I said since the beginning…it is Bucharest, Bicycle, and I, the holy molly threesome. It can’t be one without the other.
